One-minute clip reel cut together from a January 2024 shoot. As part of a Super Bowl commercial that aired locally, I had the opportunity to film the incredible Puyallup Tribe in Washington state. We shot boat to canoe on Commencement Bay, off Owen Beach in Point Defiance near Tacoma. The temperature was in the high 30s, with wind, sleet, and freezing rain. The bay was extremely choppy, with a very strong current. The members of the Puyallup Tribe are among the toughest (and kindest) people I have ever met. Tribal men, women, and children braved the elements, rowing their canoes against the freezing wind and strong current so we could capture their cultural traditions on camera. The literal translation of Puyallup means “people from the bend at the bottom of the river.” The Puyallup Tribe has become a recognized force in the fight for tribal rights. Please lend them your support when possible and take a moment to learn about the Puyallup Tribe history. https://www.puyalluptribe-nsn.gov/ We filmed using the Arriflex Mini and Canon Vintage FD lenses from HammStew LLC. A dark, bronze, stormy color grade conveys the epic quality of what was witnessed that day.

We shot a pharmaceutical marketing promo in 2006 for a drug recently approved to treat schizophrenia. It was superbly written, cast, and directed by Scott Whitham. The absence of narration was intentional, as the story was meant to be conveyed through the visual stories of 3 patients suffering from schizophrenia. The drug's name originally appeared at the end, but is omitted in this clip. We filmed this on a Panasonic VariCam with the then-trendy Pro35 camera accessory (to give the footage a ground-glass film look), and I think we used Zeiss Super Speed Primes so we could shoot wide open at f/1.4 or something similar. The HD resolution we shot back then was 720 x 480 (now one can shoot 12k at 12288 x 6480), and it was recorded on DVC tape! We worked with a fairly small and talented crew (G&E crew of 2 and 2). And if I remember correctly, we shot this over two days in December 2006. There were no clients or agency on location. Our lighting approach, utilizing KinoFlo, HMI, and Tungsten units, aimed to create as cinematic a look as possible. Almost 20 years later, I’m still proud of this one. And we all had fun ending that year with this gig!

Sizzle reel cut from an August 2024 shoot for NJDEP's local seafood and environmental awareness campaign. Directed by Rob Markopoulos. Agency was Nth Degree Media. Sweet Amalia Market and Kitchen operates an aquaculture farm in Cape May, supplying oysters to top Philadelphia restaurants. Member of the Northeast Organic Farming Association. We shot with a small crew—AC, sound, gaffer, key, and PA—working around the tide schedule in August heat. The oyster beds stretched across exposed flats at low tide, then disappeared under water hours later. The hip waders got us just as soaked from sweat as they would have from the bay. Shot on DJI Ronin 4D with Zeiss Batis glass and drone. Amazing oysters at Sweet Amalia's market. https://www.sweetamalia.com/
Throwback to 1998. My first shoot with my new Aaton XTR Super 16 camera, which I carried to set in a cardboard box. The crew got a good laugh! And we had to use light meters and stuff.
This was an instructional video for the Novartis clinical trials on “Good Clinical Practice.” Kudos to the production company for going all in and shooting on film. I can't locate the full video, but I found this cutdown from way back then. All the grain and dust are real (enhanced from 640i to 1080p up-res). We shot on Kodak Double-X 7222, rated at 250 and pushed to 500 for increased grain. We purposely didn't clean the negative before transfer. We did the transfer at NFL Films (I think to BetaSP!) and asked the colorist to use a dirty bath for the neg. I put in hours studying "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"—not only a hilarious classic, but also a technical clinic on the look of 1950s and 60s film noir movies. We had a couple days of pre-light in the studio, all tungsten units and hard light. The set design people were great. Fun times!
A style like this is much easier to pull off now. You'd still need the time, studio, set, and crew. But the post would be dramatically more efficient.
